There are infinite reasons why we are thankful to be Texas Longhorns. From the deep-rooted traditions to the amazing athletic teams, to the die-hard fans and the talented students, The University of Texas at Austin is one of the best universities in the world. Here are some of the top reasons we are thankful to be Texas Longhorns.
10. Austin Atmosphere
UT is located deep in the heart of Austin, Texas. Austin has a small college town feel with the perks of a big city. We have the best live music, ACL Festival, SXSW, an awesome night-life scene, delicious food, beautiful nature and scenery, great weather and friendly people. Plain and simple, everyone wishes they were an Austinite.
9. The 40 Acres
The aesthetic landscape on the UT campus is one of a kind. On a stroll through the 40 acres, you’ll see unique buildings like the UT Tower, large oak trees, statues of influential leaders and a variety of things that speak to all interests. For the athletic and sport lovers, there is Gregory Gym, DKR – Texas Memorial Stadium and the Frank Erwin Center. If you’re looking for shops and eateries, the Drag (Guadalupe Street for those not familiar) or the Texas Union are a must. If the arts and history is your thing, UT is home to multiple learning facilities including the Harry Ransom Center, LBJ Library and Museum, Blanton Museum of Art and Bass Concert Hall.
8. The Tower
The UT Tower is the university’s most distinguished landmark, and is lit to celebrate monumental moments at the university. Every year, this 307-foot beauty glows burnt orange or bright white to celebrate athletic victories, fall and spring commencements and academic achievements. The observation deck of the UT Tower has recently been remodeled and reopened to the public. Take a tour and see the amazing view of the UT campus and Austin!
There is one thing you cannot take away from a Texas Longhorn, and that’s the pride of being a Texas Longhorn. Traditions like the Torchlight Parade & Rally, Red River Rivalry, Hex Rally, “The Eyes of Texas,” “Texas Fight,” Smokey the Cannon and Big Bertha truly exemplify what it means to be a proud Texas Longhorn.
6. The University of Texas Spirit Program & Longhorn Band
The UT Spirit Program and the Longhorn Band serve as the face of the university, helping promote school spirit both on and off the field/court. They entertain and pump up the crowd at athletic events with an array of music and dance ensembles including traditional songs like “Texas Fight” or “The Eyes of Texas” or even songs played on the radio today. Whether they are helping start a “Texas Fight” chant, making appearances throughout Austin or competing on a national level, we love them all year round!
5. Bevo & Hook ‘Em
What would our beloved school be without a mascot? And not just any mascot, we have Bevo and Hook ‘Em, one of the most recognized mascots in sports. One of the oldest stories on campus is about how Bevo got his name. Although there are different theories, one thing remains constant, he’s the most pampered steer on the planet, and we’re glad he calls UT his home.
4. UT’s Mission & Core Purpose
As one of the nation’s leading universities, it’s important to stay focused on our goals and overall mission. UT’s mission is to achieve excellence in the interrelated areas of undergraduate education, graduate education, research and public service. In addition, UT’s core purpose is to transform lives for the benefit of society. The university upholds these standards in all aspects, and we are proud to be a part of this brilliant institution.
3. Texas Athletics
Texas Athletics has been a driving force in the Big 12 Conference and beyond. The program has spawned NFL and NBA players and many Olympians. The best part is that we get to see them grow from the freshmen rookies to national and international professional athletes. With more than 40 national championships and 88 Olympic medals won from current and former UT athletes, the Texas Athletics program is one of the best in the country. In the Big 12 Conference, Texas has earned more titles in men’s and women’s sports than any other school since the league began operating in 1996. Thanks to the Longhorn Network, we can watch our Horns all day every day!
