Flashback Friday: The Beach Boys and Rodriguez

By Laura Bennett

What do legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson and folk music singer Rodriguez have in common? Besides the fact that they’ll both take the stage at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center on June 23 for Wilson’s NO PIER PRESSURE Tour, they’re also both Erwin Center alumni. Brian Wilson’s first appearance at the Erwin Center was on April 19, 1978 with The Beach Boys and Rodriguez made his Erwin Center debut on May 4, 2013.

One more entity the two stars share is the big screen. On June 5, the Brian Wilson biopic “Love & Mercy” hits theaters nationwide, three months after a well-received premiere at South by Southwest in March of 2015. The critically acclaimed film “intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.”

Rodriguez is the star of the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man” which details a South African cultural phenomenon that follows the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen “Sugar” Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom, to find out whether the rumored death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true and if not, to discover what had become of him.
