Frank Erwin Center Among Top 100 Arenas Worldwide

From concerts to family shows to basketball games, the Frank Erwin Center has been a gathering place for many since its doors opened in 1977. Recently, the Erwin Center was ranked among the top 100 arenas worldwide by Pollstar, the only trade publication covering the worldwide concert industry. The rankings, released Oct. 7, 2016, evaluate the top arenas based on worldwide ticket sales.

If you’ve even been to the Erwin Center, you are familiar with the building’s drum-like exterior and its position on the southeast edge of The University of Texas campus, adjacent to downtown Austin. After decades of events, the Erwin Center is as much a part of Austin’s history as it is a part of the University. The arena is the largest in the city, accommodating up to 17,000.

“The Erwin Center is ranked 91 globally, which is fantastic. If you break down the list further though, you’ll see we’re number 44 in the U.S. and number two as far as college arenas. We are also likely to move up to number one by the end of the year with shows from Adele, Sia, Amy Schumer, Festival of Praise, Dolly Parton, WWE, Andrea Bocelli and the Harlem Globetrotters still to come. I’m proud of the many notable performances we’ve been able to host in 2016 and over the last 4 decades,” says Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director John Graham.

Being at the top of the list for college arenas may have a lot to do with the variety of events gracing the Erwin Center stage each year. In this respect, the Erwin Center is truly unique. Besides being the home of Texas Men’s and Women’s basketball, the arena floor also transforms for events like Monster Jam and WWE. This past year, the venue hosted the iHeartCountry Festival, Drake, Kanye West, The Cure, and Selena Gomez, among other high-grossing events. The highest grossing event of all time at the Erwin Center was a two-night event by Paul McCartney in 2013.
