Bruno Mars brings The Moonshine Jungle Tour to the Frank Erwin Center Aug. 14, and with him a special guest audiences won’t soon forget. Hailing from across the pond, Ellie Goulding will open for Mars. She has made a name for herself through her emotional soprano showcased on her 2010 debut album “Lights” and follow-up album “Halcyon” in 2012. Get to know the English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist before she dazzles the crowd in Austin!
Elena Jane “Ellie” Goulding grew up in Lyonstall, a small village in Herefordshire, England. Goulding’s mother worked as a supermarket clerk while she single-handedly raised Goulding and her three siblings. Always passionate for music, Goulding learned clarinet at age nine and guitar at age 14. She began writing her own songs when she was only 15 years old and never looked back. In her second year studying drama, politics and English at the University of Kent, her unique voice was discovered by a music management company at a talent competition.
After signing with Polydor Records in 2009, her career lifted off to new heights. Goulding’s debut studio album, “Lights” was released in the U.K. in 2010, and was an immediate success. The dance-pop album debuted at No. 1 in the U.K., selling more than 850,000 copies. Goulding toured in support of “Lights” and performed with Passion Pit in March 2010, and with John Mayer during his British tour in May of the same year. Even Prince William and Kate Middleton loved “Lights.” The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge personally invited Goulding to perform at their royal wedding reception as their only live performer! The newly married royal couple shared their first dance to Goulding’s cover of Sir Elton John’s classic “Your Song.” While “Lights” topped the U.K. charts, the album’s title track “Lights” wasn’t released in the U.S. until March 2011. The delay didn’t alter the success one bit, and the single lasted over a year on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Riding on the fame of her upbeat debut album and increased exposure around the world, Goulding was ready to create her sophomore album “Halcyon,” which has a dark and mellow feel. According to Goulding’s website, the album was inspired by loneliness. She explained, “The new record Halcyon describes a journey out of heartache and towards hope.”
“Halcyon’s” powerful boldness is a testament to the meteoric rise of Goulding’s artistic ability. The album was released in October 2012 and quickly became an international success. It debuted at No. 2 in the U.K. and sold more than 33,000 copies in its first week. In the U.S. “Halcyon” sold more than 34,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. The album also made the charts in New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and Australia!
Goulding is not only an amazing singer but a passionate advocate for exercising as well. In 2011, she teamed up with Nike in an innovative partnership to promote her music and the value of fitness. Goulding told Nike, “Music and fitness are two of the most important things in my life.” To celebrate the collaboration, Goulding created a mix of “Lights,” called “Run into the Light.” Available on iTunes, this remix provides the perfect soundtrack for a quick jog or a long run to clear the mind!
Although an England native, Goulding loves touring in the U.S. She believes that “[Americans] embrace everything… They’ll take your biggest fault and turn it into something positive.” If Goulding enjoys the U.S., she’ll definitely love the live music capital of the world! Don’t miss Ellie Goulding when she opens for Bruno Mars at the Frank Erwin Center Aug. 14!
