Like it or not, summer has officially arrived and so has the dreaded Texas heat. We can prepare for it all we want, but we still never get fully acclimated to the 100 plus degree temperatures. Don’t let the heat intimidate you though, there are plenty of fun activities around Austin to help combat those scorching temperatures. Here are a few of our favorite keep-cool ideas that are sure to help you beat the heat on those seemingly unbearable hot summer days!

1. Dare to dip into Barton Springs.

Barton Springs Pool is known for icy cold temperatures and is a popular cool down hangout for locals. Located in Zilker Park, the pool’s temperature never rises above 71 degrees, making it very appealing on those blazing summer days. Grassy areas surround the pool, allowing perfect lounging spots for visitors.

2. Hang out at Hamilton.

Hamilton Pool is one of the many swimming holes Central Texas has to offer. Located just 30 minutes west of Austin, Hamilton Pool gives great exposure to the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Inside the preserve, a 45-foot tall waterfall highlights the swimming area. Not only is Hamilton Pool a great place to swim, but numerous trails surround the area for hiking enthusiasts to enjoy.

3. Keep it “Kool” at Krause.

If Hamilton Pool is full, its neighbor Krause Springs is sure to fulfill your swimming hole wishes. Krause Springs has been privately owned by the Krause family for over 30 years and provides patrons with more than 32 natural springs to explore and dive into. If camping is your style, this is the perfect place for you! Within the property are 24 RV sites as well as prime tent camping spots.

4. Explore Lady Bird Lake.

Driving to the hill country too far for you? No problem! Austin’s historic Lady Bird Lake has bundles of activities for you to enjoy with friends and family. If water sports are your calling, check out the paddle boarding and kayaking. In addition to water activities, Lady Bird Lake has a seven-mile trail surrounding the lake for runners and walkers alike to use at their leisure. For all dog lovers out there, there is a fenced- in dog park located right before you reach I-35. If you’re looking for a more group-friendly outing or even a romantic date, a cruise on the lake is right for you!

5. Satisfy your sweet tooth with ice cream or shaved ice.

With summer temperatures reaching triple digits, what better way to keep your body cool than indulging in a frozen sweet treat? Austin boasts some of the most famous ice cream and shaved ice joints in the state. With flavors like Texas Dirt Cake and Tutti Fruitti, you can’t go wrong!
