The Nightowls, an Austin-based 10-piece band, will join the Longhorn Pep Band for a special halftime performance at the Texas Longhorns Men’s Basketball Big 12 matchup vs. Iowa State presented by Marsh & McLennan Agency on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. The Nightowls were formed in 2011, achieving critical acclaim with their debut album “Good as Gold” in 2014 and a spot on the Best New Bands list in the annual Austin Chronicle Music Awards.
The group received rave reviews once more for their 2015 album “Royal Sessions.” The album was recorded live over two days at the famed Royal Studios in Memphis, TN. “We head back into the studio soon to start recording our 3rd LP. The album will feature the stand-out songs from our live show as well as new material we’ve been crafting behind the scenes,” says the band’s founder Ryan Harkrider.
Dubbed “Austin’s Soul Royalty” by Do512, the group prides itself on its engaging performances. “We are a high-energy, 10-piece, soul band that put on raucous live shows and play music that ranges from classic Motown to modern R&B,” adds Harkrider. The special halftime performance at the Frank Erwin Center will feature a medley based on the group’s song “Get Up,” supported by the Longhorn Pep Band. The performance marks a return to the Frank Erwin Center for the Nightowls, who previously performed the National Anthem at a basketball game. Harkrider is a UT graduate along with his wife and fellow band-member, Ellie Carroll, and trumpet player, Luke Scallan, who is also a former member of the Longhorn Pep Band.
The Nightowls dance into the Erwin Center on Feb. 7 in the midst of a string of performances in and around Austin. They’ve been busy, to say the least. The group’s guitarist, Rydog Johnson, remarks that, “People come to our show to party and we love that.” He says, “We play a lot of settings but the thing that’s different is the people that come out. That’s the energy we really feed off of.”
“We incorporate dance into all our live performances,” says Harkrider. Johnson explains that the group’s vocalists Ellie Carroll and Sara Stein lead the choreography and that “[it’s] pretty organic. The lyrics usually lends itself to the moves.” Drummer, Ben Petree, cites their song “Get Up” as a perfect example of the soulful and fun movement their songs inspire from the band and the crowd.
Come enjoy this special halftime performance and cheer on your Texas Longhorns on Feb. 7 at 8 p.m.! Tickets to the game start at $7 and may be purchased online at TexasSports.com/tickets or by calling 512-471-3333.
