This fall, the musical production “The Color Purple” The Musical about Love is coming to The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center! “The Color Purple” is a 1982 epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker, and won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. Although “The Color Purple” was published over 30 years ago, it has since been hugely successful as a novel, on screen film and a Broadway musical!
This new musical production is directed by John Ruffin and will feature over 50 of the most talented actors, singers and dancers. Ruffin has received success and praise for his musical stage play directorial debut of “DreamGirls Chicago,” Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity, and his adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s novel, “Imitation of Life.” Audiences know Ruffin for producing and directing other successful stage plays such as “Love Me and Leave Me,” “The Ideal Husband” and “All My Single Ladies,” which are featured on television and DVD, as well as “The Other Woman,” “All for Love,” “No More Sheets” and “Mr. Right Now or Mr. Wrong Later.” Montina Chrisp will once again electrify the audiences with her amazing choreography; her work in “DreamGirls” received rave reviews from industry professionals, media outlets and theater goers alike.
The musical adaptation is an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable story of a woman who – through love – finds strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world. Taking place in 1930s southern rural Georgia, the story focuses on issues such as the disruption of traditional gender roles, infanticide, domestic violence, racial oppression and spiritual crisis. With key characters Celie, Nettie, Shrug and Mr. Johnson, the audience goes on an emotional journey to gain insight into the lives of these African-Americans.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the production is “One of the most uplifting and thrilling nights I’ve ever spent in any theatre. It’s a winner!”
The Mercury News agrees and said, “This shake-the-rafters musical makes a joyful noise. ‘The Color Purple’ is pure gold.”
Set to a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, “The Color Purple” The Musical about Love is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.
