In its 35 years of existence, the Frank Erwin Center has seen it all. From changes in the Austin landscape to changes around the world, this building has been around to experience history in the making. When it first opened its doors on Nov. 29, 1977, the population in Austin was 312,900; gas was about 62 cents per gallon and the word “Google” seemed like a foreign language. Today, the Austin population is 842,750, we won’t even mention the price of gas and “Google-ing” to find information is a part of our everyday life.
Now, it’s time for another change. Applause, the entertainment monthly of the Frank Erwin Center, has been a source of information to our readers since its inception in 1980. What started out as a black and white publication soon became a full-color print and on-line magazine. For the last 30 years, Applause has been a platform where readers could find information about upcoming shows at both the Frank Erwin Center and Texas Performing Arts, enter to win show tickets and has allowed us to share our experiences with the many people who have supported and visited our beloved building.
Beginning Sept. 1, Applause will transform into an online blog and we will no longer print hard copies. This has been a long project in the making and we are excited to begin a new journey and enhance our stories and the content we provide to our readers. In next month’s email, we’ll provide the Applause blog web address so you can continue to keep up to date with all the latest happenings at the Frank Erwin Center and around Austin. Change is inevitable, so here’s to the start of something new!
