Wanna Get Away? The Best Getaways Less Than a Gas Tank Away

Float on! (50 miles)
With the weather heating up, a trip to the river is sure to make a splash. Head down to New Braunfels, about 40 minutes south of Austin. Grab an inner tube, some snacks, maybe some beers (if you are of legal drinking age of course), and sit back and relax as you float down the beautiful Comal River.

Remember the Alamo (78 miles)

Just a quick drive away, San Antonio is the perfect place to get away and get a change of scenery. With a culture all its own that has a very Spanish influence, San Antonio is an amazing place to go for a quick escape from Austin. Visit the Alamo, and see where the most famous battle of the War for Texas Independence took place. The Battle of the Alamo was a battle where around 200 Texas fighters defended the Alamo Mission against over 2,000 Mexican soldiers. All of the Texas fighters perished and Mexico won the battle, but it was a significant step to victory in the war for the Texans. Make sure to take a stroll down the Riverwalk district. You’ll be able to find some of the best Tex-Mex the state has to offer here.

Meat lovers rejoice (34 miles)

Barbeque fan? If so this next trip is for you. Just about 30 mins south of Austin sits the little town of Lockhart. Known as the BBQ capital of Texas, there are 3 legendary restaraunts to choose from: Smitty’s Market, Kreuz Market and Black’s Barbeque. You cannot go wrong at any of these places if you are a fan of smoked meats. Make sure to bring a pillow for the car because you may need a nap after stuffing your face with all that meat.

Dance the night away (46 miles)

Country music fans, this stop is for you! Located just outside of New Braunsfels, the quaint town of Gruene is home to the oldest continuously running dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall. Built in 1878, this venue is a landmark in Texas country music. The hall has hosted a long list of country music legends including George Strait, Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson and so many more. Strap on some boots, grab a cold beer and swing the night away at this historic honky-tonk.

Romance awaits (80 miles)
Looking for a romantic getaway with your significant other? Fredericksburg is the place for you. Located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, this rustic town is the perfect place to escape with that special someone. There are plenty of Bed and Breakfast’s scattered throughout the small town of 11,000 people. Head to downtown for some shopping. This area is also known as the Texas Wine Country and there are tons of wineries scattered throughout. Fredericksburg is the perfect place for some good old fashioned relaxation.
